About this deal

It has all the ingredients of a classic children’s mystery story: friendship, adventure, a seaside setting and of course, a loyal dog.

When orphaned Laura Marlin moves from a children’s home to live with her uncle in Cornwall, she longs for a life of excitement just like the characters in her favourite detective novels. Summary: The thoroughly enjoyable first book in a series about a likeable young orphan who dreams of being a detective. I read this book originally at the beginning of 2020 but thanks to the global situation I was not in the right headspace to really have enjoyed it so I am very thankful to my fellow mystery society members to have the opportunity to really read and deep dive into the story again. It also made me think about who you should put your trust in because even the closest person might not be as trustful as you think they are.Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that this is a children’s book – and with a main character aged 11, it is probably targetting 8-10 year olds as its main audience. It never talks down to the audience and is a clever book that covers "issues" without forcing them on you.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

It seems that orphaned children finding out they have flawed yet deeply interesting relations who step up to look after them is a slice of narrative planning that works well. Also the description of his physical appearance makes us think that he is probably a bad person who has power and can do anything he want when he is really not like that. She longs for excitement in her life, although when her wish comes true she finds, like most people, that the reality isn't nearly as much fun as the dream.
