About this deal

Each contestant has their own motives for getting involved with the show, mainly the money, fame or more and at what cost when they find out the potential dread that follows that their biggest secret may be about to be revealed. What they thought was a show in the vein of Survivor was, in reality, a show that would expose their deep, dark secrets. I read the ARC for the first book in the “DC Morgan” series (The Last Party) in 2022, and I remember saying if another book about DC Ffion Morgan came out, I’d be here for it. Although I haven’t read the first book of this series yet, I’ve had it for months just haven’t gotten around to reading it, I was able to read this one with no issue.

Instead of a survival show, they have inadvertently signed up for a exposure show, where you have to win to not having your secrets exposed. No wonder that this leads to a contestant disappearing, because some secrets are too dark to be revealed. It is a reality show and there are seven contestants involved and they have no clue what they have let themselves in for. It's a book to offer hope when you feel as though there's none to be had; a book to give to a friend when you don't know what to say. This is a book that is great for you holiday and I do recommend you read the first book The Last Party but you will be ok if you haven't read this.Dat bevatte interessante onderzoekslijnen en vooral het raden naar ieders geheimen vond ik spannend. Of course, I can readily give five stars to any book written by the brilliant author Clare Mackintosh, as she's an auto-approved author for me. The second Ffion and Leo crime novel, with the action taking place during filming of a very plausible reality tv show. Ffion is a mess, she is reluctant to use evidence that might incriminate her friend, she goes hot and cold over Leo and she is trying to build a relationship with her teenage daughter. Sometimes you have a book that has too much going on, there’s too much info to follow but this book I think has the right amount.

The more off than on vibes between those two are terrific and keeps you guessing throughout which is pretty much how Leo feels! The following morning the shows producers informs the police at Bryndare that contestant Ryan Francis is missing. The producer, Miles Young, the founder of Young Production, chose the contestants without giving them information about the secret revelation part and made them sign a contract that restricts them from leaving the competition. I was never bored and was invested in the drama behind the secrets of the reality contestants, as well as the drama that makes up Ffion’s life. All of them threaten to walk out, until Miles, the producer and creator of the show, points out that they have all signed contracts, with sufficiently robust but unread small print that means they are all trapped in the show. He’s well matched with Ffion who is such a brilliant character, she’s funny, a motor mouth, great at her job and rather impossible to both live with and without.

Picking up Ffion’s story, and the filming of a reality show set in the fictional village of Pen Y Ddraig, I was hooked from the start.
