About this deal

In between, Lily and Atlas steal away for romantic moments that are even sweeter for their authenticity as Lily struggles with child care, breastfeeding, and running a business while trying to find time for herself. I guess that this does chime with the repeated refrain 'slow but then fast at the end' which pretty much sums up this book!

Mhairi McFarlane has been one of my favourite authors for a while now, and as such I was sorry to find that her latest offering did not live up to expectations (though admittedly they are high for this author). You know it’s going to be good, because all of her books are good, so you can just kind of relax into reading it. Their relationship has been foundering for some time, as the more successful he has become professionally, the more cold and dismissive he has become to down-to-earth schoolteacher Roisin. The pacing perhaps felt a little off, with the first half rather slow, and then a bit too much happening in the second half.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This is the second title, in a handful of days, from yet another auto-read author that has not quite measured up to the ones that came before and, also, my expectations. While her female protagonist occasionally seems written to incite the reader’s exasperation, Roisin’s scenes with other women and the portrait of her flawed mother show a more deft hand at representing the gender. From the first pages, it's not clear how long Roisin will tolerate Joe in her life, despite their decade together, since their relationship has been on a steady downward trajectory for quite a while. I think I miss the quieter books, the lower scale bits and bobs, though it's hard to properly describe that.

Dev has hired a luxury Heritage listed house for a getaway where the original group, plus Dev’s partner, will gather for a weekend to catch up and also watch the first episode of Joe’s new show. And the time she has spent with him over the weekend has seemingly only solidified all the things that don’t work between them now – his constant sniping and jealousy of Matt, etc. Eine Lektüre, die nicht nur das Herz erwärmt, sondern auch als Geschenk für besondere Menschen glänzt. Even worse, when she confronts him about it, he doesn’t seem to understand the need to if not ask her for permission to use her story (which she wouldn’t give) but at least warn her.

The basic premise of the book is this: on a friends’ getaway, Roisin starts to suspect that her boyfriend’s new TV show picks closely from real life in some of its plot. I do also think though that these are pretty irredeemable traits for any person to embody, and so unlike other books by her, Joe is a fascinating, if rather one-dimensional character. I think this is because I didn't particularly like them as a group of characters and the storyline just wasn't for me. But although Roisin is thrilled to spend a weekend with her friends, she can’t deny that something is missing these days – not just in the core group, which has some distance between some of the friendships that time and different levels of socioeconomic status have amplified.I’m talking as if I’m more influential than I am probably because 3am reviewwww and I think I’m funnier than I am. and nobody felt too caricature-like, everything was just very messy in the way human beings do usually get. And Matt, well it was lovely to just have my heart warmed any time that he was with Roisin, as you could tell that, despite how Joe was trying to depict him, he was genuinely a nice guy. latest tackles the difficult subject of domestic violence with romantic tenderness and emotional heft.
