Although the book’s subtitle, “Fragments of an Unknown Teaching,” is presumably meant to indicate that the connectedness between all the various ideas cannot be made intellectually explicit, but must be discovered through experience, and although from a certain point of view it must still be considered a preliminary treatment, nevertheless the impression of an awesomely comprehensive system of ideas is inescapable.

He set up his own organisation, The Society for the Study of Normal Psychology, which is now known as The Study Society. That is, they like to imagine they've contacted the "real" inner work--as opposed to those fools who imagine any other traditions can lead to awakening. His psychology is at times interesting and is probably what attracts people to this system in the first place. For much of his adult life, Gurdjieff had wandered Central Asia, Egypt, Iran, India, Tibet, and many other places. I especially enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of various places where miracles were to have occurred.Ouspensky originally titled the book simply Fragments of an Unknown Teaching, reflecting his view that Gurdjieff's system had to be "assembled" by the student himself, as well as his view that much of the original system was probably lost. Initially, Ouspensky had intended this book to be published only if Beelzebub's Tales were not published. For the first time, miraculous places of Lithuania are analyzed in the broader international context. Instead, Gurdjieff presents a "Fourth Way", which strives to develop each of these centers in harmony.

He met Gurdjieff in Moscow in 1915, and was associated with the ideas and practices originating with Gurdjieff from then on. The 2004 facsimile edition of the first edition is identical in every way apart from a few modifications.These are the Way of the Fakir, dealing exclusively with the physical body, the Way of the Monk, dealing with the emotions, and the Way of the Yogi, dealing with the mind. Some argue that in the Western esoteric tradition, Gurdjieff was the one true master keyholder, far surpassing Crowley, Blavatsky or any other of the western guru-types for the depth and clarity of both his teachings and his being.
