About this deal

The key witness against D'Amico is a thief nicknamed Frenchie, who stole high-end artworks for The Nose. But when the defendant in a federal case against a high-powered New York gangster decides to cooperate and provides evidence that Burke’s death was mob-related, prosecutor Nora Carleton and her investigator, Benny Dugan, find themselves digging in to Burke’s background and his links to the infamous Gambino family in a race against time to find the truth before an innocent woman goes to jail.

At another point the same agent—a grizzled veteran type, naturally—observes to Carleton, “Yup, this work is pretty fucked up, ain’t it, kid? When we first meet Nora Carleton and Benny Dugan, they are in the middle of a high-stakes trial that will see a prominent criminal put away for a long time. A mobster’s trial and the murder of a former New York governor reveal a possible intersection between the Mafia and politics. So if you're wanted by the law that badly, they will go out of their way to set up an entire restaurant where the other "patrons", "waiters", "chefs", etc. In the Mafia trial, when it appears that Frenchie's evidence will convict D'Amico, the mobster secretly passes a note to the prosecution team, in an effort to make a deal. I think the plot was well done, realistic and engaging, and if it dragged on in places then so do real investigations. There is somehow no time for subjects or prepositions, even when a junior FBI agent is describing her Thanksgiving travel plans to her colleagues in a sit-down meeting: “Flight early tomorrow to San Fran to see my family. His bestselling book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership was published in 2018 and made into a 2020 television limited-series. Included on Nora’s team is a seasoned ex-cop investigator, Benny, and a fresh out of Quantico FBI agent, Jessica. S. attorney’s office in Manhattan separately pursue a lead indicating that the murder was (for some unexplained reason) a mob hit. She and her team work hard to put away a mob hit woman who not only killed the governor but has a long list of hits.
