About this deal

Following a preview of the first semi-final on Tuesday, reporter Katie Walderman mixed up Finnish Eurovision entrant Kaarija (Jere Pöyhönen) with a fan who was wearing a pretty convincing lookalike outfit. In other Eurovision news, earlier this week, fans in Liverpool were left feeling emotional after a short film was aired ahead of the semi-final rounds, featuring late television presenter Paul O’Grady. The man, who actually turned out to be a member of an Australian Eurovision fan group was approached on the street by reporters for the news programme BBC North West Tonight, who declared to viewers that they had “managed to catch up with the main man himself”. Käärijä made it through to Saturday night’s final (May 13) following his performance at the first of the two semi-final rounds. This year’s edition of the song contest is taking place in Liverpool, due to the ongoing conflict taking place in Ukraine — who were the winners of the contest in 2022. Tune into BBC One from 8pm for all of tonight’s action, and at the same time on Saturday for the final. We’re assuming that the UMK23 winner has the contact details for the vendor who sold him the item, and that that vendor may be the Finnish equivalent of Party City. We went to a bar with my producer to watch ice hockey and he said, "We have to do this cha cha cha song," and we did. The BBC then showed Walderman’s interview with the real Kaarija, who luckily said he had found the mix-up ‘funny’. Yet the trademark outfit has also led to more than a few copycats, with people taking to the streets of Liverpool dressed as the “Cha Cha Cha” singer, with bare chests and combed-forward hair to match.

Walderman added: ‘I wished him luck for the semi-final – so I put them in my (news interview) package.
