About this deal

It should prove entertaining for anyone beyond young children and the most discerning of heavyweight strategy gamers. The other upside to horse ownership is a payday if your nag is in the top three places at the end of the race.

Long Shot encourages you to forge a path through its puzzle without dictating direction (though I recommend forwards for the horses). If you bet too heavily on a leader, others will either hop on your coattails or run you into the dirt. Then you come crashing down as your favourite is overtaken by some no-name from way back in the pack. While it might look like a crapshoot at first, Long Shot: The Dice Game offers you just enough control over proceedings to make it a very interesting horse indeed.Owning a horse is a good thing, as they have abilities which are activated whenever that horse is chosen by the dice of destiny. The eight-sided die determines which horse moves each turn, but it also limits your personal action to effects bounded to this horse. After a game or two you’ll notice people saving these movement bonuses up until the end of the game, and it makes the last third of the game fantastic. Each horse’s card shows the other horses that move along with it, each of them trotting 1 space only.

These can be anything from giving you the occasional free bet to manipulating how you fill out concessions.

Thankfully, Long Shot the Dice Game is edge of your seat fun without watching old people lose their life savings. People will cheer, and others will curse, as that horse that was one space from winning gets shunted back three spaces. Then it will remarkably speed up before slowing a touch as the depth of the design emerges and a new level of strategy and thoughtfulness is appreciated.

Rather it is a betting game that uses writing for convenience and ease of play, rather than a pure design choice. You can cross out the helmet which allows you to bet on this horse even when it has passed the ‘no bet’ line. There are several sets of these cards with different special abilities so you can mix and match, ensuring there’s plenty of variety and replay value. In some ways this game reminds us of Downforce but the dice and the options on the player board add another layer to the gameplay.
