About this deal

I have not come across many other children's books that explore fantasy worlds this imaginatively and can draw a reader in to them. I thoroughly enjoyed the book as an adult reader, so I would say that the interest level could easily stretch up to children aged 12.

In her free time, you can find her holed up in her room, gaming and watching anime (some of her favorites being Inuyasha, Dragon Ball Z, and Death Note), or attending numerous comic cons and gaming events. I loved the strong bond she has with her little brother, Lucas, and how her need to keep him safe helps develop her awareness of her own inner strength and her self-belief.Mia and the Lightcasters plunges readers into the middle of a game where the objective is to survive by overthrowing the reaper king - a demonic-inspired character set on destroying the world - and restoring peace. But, although each urban fantasy author puts her own spin on these beings, they are all drawn from folklore. None of them are a liability, but instead they form a great team who help each other out along the way.

There were definitely points in the early chapters when I felt I was on the receiving end of an infodump. Mia and the Lightcasters is the debut fantasy novel by Janelle McCurdy; it is an exciting journey through the shadows of a strange land, toward the City of Light. I loved the Umbra, they were such a fantastic idea, and Mia's umbra, Lux and Nox were especially brilliant and very sassy, bringing a bit of a light humour to a book with a darker story. It's hard to say why I enjoyed this book so much, the characters were all great and interesting to read about (i've read a few books recently where i couldn't connect at all with any of the characters, so this was really refreshing! After graduating from Royal Holloway University with a criminology and sociology degree, Janelle moved back home to London and began writing middle grade fantasy.
